ORER Notes

Discussion, General Notes

  • Per Tim Gilbert
At the turn of the century, the B&M and Fitchburg's boxcars were 34' long. The Fitchburg decided to bypass the evolutionary development of 36 footers, and build 40 footers instead.

The calculated load limit of the #11000 [series], 99,700 pounds, exceeded every subsequent boxcar acquisition until the first boxcar with 5½" x 10" journals, the #69999, an ex-B&O boxcar rebuilt in 1943. This series may have been described in the ORER as "Box, Grain", but if they ever did carry a full load of grain, wayside farmers would have thought that to be pennies came from heaven. These cars were just too light. The last was off the roster by 1926 - 26 years after it was built, even thought he economy was good. (e.g. - Compare to the retirement of the 36' WUF boxcars in 1934 when they were surplus due to the depression.)

  • Eric Neubauer points out that these may be ex- B&M 51100 series cars. I need more ORER listings in the 1900-1901 era to figure this out.
  • KGA - I am wondering if the "Fitchburg" on the class card refers to the *shops*, NOT the railroad?
(These cars do not show up in the 06-1900 ORER, the 55100 series shows up by the 03-1901 ORER in the B&M, not ex-Fitchburg, listing)

Also, the attrition rate before 1920 does not seem excessive (when the cars were 20 years old), so either there was a lot of rebuilding going on, or Tim's assertion that they were "just too light" needs re-examination...

Note the "Book page number" below refers to the page number in the B&MRRHS book.
As the B&MRRHS book's pages are NOT numbered, "1" is the first page with an actual diagram! (NOT the title pages or index pages)
"U" = upper diagram on that page, "L" = lower diagram

The "Diagram number" refers to the circled number (lower right corner) in each diagram (the original page number)
