ORER Notes

Discussion, General Notes

  • Fishbelly steel underframe, double-sheathed, wood ends
  • Per Tim Gilbert
During World War II, there was a tremendous car shortage due to the demand for cars, and the lack of new cars built during the depression. New car construction ran afoul of the War Production Board's Rationing Regulations. Railroads were forced to scramble, and one way they could acquire more cars was to rebuild wrecks. P&LE 33596 was a candidate as a contribution to the war effort, which the B&M rebuilt into their (2nd) #64680 (the first having gone to its better reward in the late 1930s [per ORER data, between April and July, 1939]). The second #64680 was never [?] listed as a separate entity in the ORERs, but included in the #64680-65687 series lines because it was a 36' SUF boxcar with 5" x 9" journals. Its inside height was 8'-4" (4" more than its step-sisters) and cubic capacity was 2550 (vs. 2467 and 2542 of the original #64680s). Second #64680 may have lasted until 1948, but it was no longer listed in the April, 1949 ORER [see above - it was no longer listed in October, 1948]
