B&M vs. New Haven style steel underframe

The "Wood body" Steel underframe box cars (the series this web page covers, plus some other series as shown in the table) had two distinct underframe designs, named per the car classification cards (all are 30 ton except as noted, original ends except as noted):

While the different underframe designs are shown separately on the classification cards (see above), this series (65688-68287) was ONE listing in the ORERs unless the steel ends were applied. So (other than the initial build counts) we don't know how many cars of the each underframe design with "Original" ends survived until the cars were retired.

Note there were also 250 reefers (12800-13049 series) with NH style steel underframes.

This section of the web page is meant as a starting point for discussion, to (at least) point out the major differences between the underframe designs. In the absence of drawings, we have, from photographic evidence, been able to discern 2 differences - the end sill and the side sill.

B&M Style end sill (65688-66787)

B&M Style side sill (65688-66787)

Note how the side sill "stops" at the body bolster (above the truck)
I would suspect there is something (an "L"?), hidden by the sheathing, along the side, between the bolster and end sill. But as I don't have a better photo or a drawing available, that is speculation

Discussion, General Notes

  • Note these cars were built in at least 8 groups, along with 2 "special service" groups

  • Note: the following also applies to the #12100-12299 and #12300-12399 series cars, and SC #790-869, and VV #213-232
    Following is paraphrased from Tim Gilbert:
    Because of differences in the end designs, the earlier series #65688-66687 [B&M design], had 39 feet more cubic capacity when the 7/7 stamped steel ends were installed than the later series #66788-68247 [NH design].

    Re: the #66788-68247 series, per Tim Gilbert:

    While the ORERs listed that these cars as built with wooden ends had the B&M standard as-built 2,467 feet cubic capacity, the B&M class card showed 2,477 cubic feet. The New Haven, which built about 14,000 cars to this design, listed the cubic capacity as 2,448 feet.
  • [KGA] presumably the NH design was chosen as a standardization move as the New Haven gained control over the B&M.
  • [KGA] Without doing a statistical analysis, from the retirement dates of the steel end cars, it seems like the B&M underframe cars lasted *slightly* longer than the NH design cars did. Whether that translated to the wood end cars, or not, is unknown. Lacking further info, it should be safe to *assume* they lasted in proportion to their original numbers.
  • From Eric Neubauer Laconia data, the following cars were listed (or vacant) in the USRA valuation survey, 6/30/1914:
