Discussion, General Notes

  • Per Tim Gilbert
750 boxcars were purchased from Pullman Standard in 1947 - 500 of them going to the B&M as their #74000-74499, and the other 250 to the Maine Central as their #6500-6749. Cars were equipped with 7 panel Superior doors. They were examples of early PS-1 production.

In 1958, forty of the B&M's cars were equipped with four overhead grain loading hatches, and renumbered in the #67000-67039 series. These cars were temporarily classed as AAR "LC", but were soon reclassed to "XM"

In 1961, 175 of the "normal" #74000s were subject to a "sale/leaseback" arrangement with US Railway Equipment Co., and renumbered into the #1000-#1174 series. The remaining survivors were disposed of, although the #4000-4499 series was used temporarily as a "clearing" account. The net result of all these maneuverings meant that there were 269 fewer cars of the nee #74000 series on the B&M owned or leased. US Railway Equipment Co. probably got them for their own lease fleet. These 269 cars could probably be deemed surplus on account of the 1538 boxcars purchased in 1956-1957 concurrent with the decline of freight tonnage requiring boxcars. The #1000 series paint scheme was the standard McGinnis "Black and Blue" one applied to 40' boxcars.

  • Per Railway Age (Aug 13, 1927, p291) and/or B&MRRHS Newsletter (Nov-Dec 2000 issue, p6)
#74000-74024 had MTC (rather than B&M) reporting marks
  • Per B&M RR Employees' Magazine Dec, 1946 (vol 18 No. 12), p13
The Boston and Maine Railroad placed an order for 500 new box cars in November [1946], estimated to cost approximately $1,870,000.

The new cars will be 40 feet long, with a weight capacity of 50 tons, while their interior space, 3,898 cubic feet, will make them the largest capacity 40-foot box cars ever owned by the railroad.

The order was placed with the Pullman-Standard Car Manufacturing Company for earliest possible delivery

  • Differences between the "pre-1950" and later PS-1 designs
Kadee has a very nice flier illustrating the differences between the "pre-1950" PS-1 design and later cars

This was first brought to my attention on the main@RealSTMFC.groups.io list, in a thread titled "Kadee early PS-1" (started 02-Mar-2021)

In a reply in the thread, Ed hawkins comments on the roof designs:

The two roof versions are the original (but short-lived) PS-1 welded roof and alternate PS-1 roof.
The alternate roof is like the post-1950 roof except lacking crosswise pressed corrugations on the two roof sheets adjacent to the ends.

Railroads matching the existing [pre-1950?] Kadee PS-1 bodies with 10-panel welded sides include the following.
LV, BM, CGW, KCS, MEC, NYC (original PS-1 welded roof)
ATSF, COPR, CMO, CNW, DSS&A, NH, P&WV, Southern, UP (alternate early-version riveted PS-1 roof)

Models

Many models of PS-1s have been produced. Perhaps the best (HO) ones are the Kadee and Intermountain, both of which have produced B&M decorated cars, although I don't have details right now. Be careful (particularly) with the door sizes/types and the 6 dimples at the peak of the ends. (note the 74000 series did NOT have them!)
As Kadee releases the B&M cars in small batches, I am not going to list them all here

Con-Cor also has a 40' (I think) PS-1 model (look on their web site under "HO - kits") of unknown accuracy for the B&M (none are decorated for the B&M). Make sure you look at the "regular" door ones, not the "insulated - plug door" ones. Still available as of Dec-2020

Per B&MRRHS Modelers Notes #24 (Jan, 1992) Weaver had an O scale PS-1 available. Unknown accuracy for the B&M, unknown if any were painted for the B&M

Per B&MRRHS Modelers Notes #38 (Jul, 1995) the McKean PS-1 kit might be better for these as it is closer to the "pre-1950 changes" design (no 6 "dimples" in the end, no crossbearer at center of door, side sill tabs different, 2 roof end panels "flat")

Note Walthers did a HO scale 40' PS-1 "early" design, which has correct ends, and probably most other details, except it has a 6' Superior door (not 7' as the B&M had).
Undec kit Part #910-2350, still visible on their web site as of Feb, 2021 (but listed "out of stock")
