ORER Notes
Note "A" (1929-11 thru 1930-09)
Cars in these series which are stencilled 100,000 pounds capacity are being re-stencilled 80,000 pounds capacity
With 5½" x 10" journals, the "pre-1925" effective maximum load limit the #81000-81499 series could carry was 55 tons,
which was a much better match between cubic capacity and weight of a coal load than the #80000s could achieve. Given the 40,300
pount "light weight" with the larger truck journals, many car owners would have opted to make the "nominal capacity" 55 tons.
This election, in turn, would raise the effective "pre-1925" load limit from 110,000 pounds to 121,000. This would have been allowed
because the calculated load limit (128,700 pounds) was more than 55 tons x 110%. The relevance of opting for a
non-standard "nominal capacity" became moot after the adoption of the 1925 stenciling requirements. Anyway, in the case of the #81000,
the B&M opted for the standard 50 ton nominal capacity.
Inside height of the the #81000s was 4'-4" which was distinguishing difference in the side view from the #80000 series. Their 16 inside
stake pockets per side made them better candidates for conversion to pulpwood racks (see series 29000-29099) in 1929 than their older cousins.
Both the #80000 and 81000 seres may have been retired a bit prematurely because of good terms offered to finance the construction in 1936
of the #92000-92749 series of 41'-6" gons which provided Bethlehem Steel some business during the Depression. Both series had arch bar trucks
which the ICC was banning from interchange service in the late 1930s.
Per Railway Age (Aug 13, 1927, p291) and/or B&MRRHS Newsletter (Nov-Dec 2000 issue, p6)
[at least] 25 cars in this series had MTC (rather than B&M) reporting marks [random #s]

In B&MRRHS Modelers Notes #62 (Sep-Oct 1999) from C Harmantas indicates the Reb Caboose [now Intermountain?] GS drop bottom gons would be a good starting point to kitbash these cars
