Scanned Car Data

The links on this page are to Freight Car data scanned from the archives, and transcriptions thereof.

Car Books

The car books were small bound books recording all car purchases only (for 1899-1917 books) and purchases/changes/dispositions (for the 1923-1960 books). As Squarespace has a 20 MB limit for file size, larger scans were broken into 18-19 MB files to allow them to be uploaded. The index links are repeated here for convenience, they are the same documents as on the “main” on-line archive page.

Scanned/transcribed by Ken Akerboom

Record of freight, passenger, and, sometimes, “Rail Motor Cars” (i.e. EMC and Budd RDC)
Proof-reading has been done on all index files. Errata from the first versions has been highlighted in yellow.
ALSO NOTE: PDFs are mostly about 18-19 MB!

Freight Car Classification Books

Car Disposition Records

These records (on “Letter” size paper, mostly) record the fates for each individual car. I have yet to do a detailed analysis, but they appear to be initially created in the mid-1920s, and go until about 1960. Again, the scans for the larger classes were broken into parts to fit the 20 MB file size limit. Sometimes more than one list was created for a car series - the “letters” (e.g. “A”, “B”, etc.) are my “best guess” as to their order of creation.

Transcribed data (Excel)

Organization: The original documents are in the B&MRRHS Archives, as item 2004.36.285. They are in 2 boxes (box 1 & 2 :-) and several folders, Each folder is numbered and “named” for the types of cars in the folder (sometimes incorrectly…)

Derived data

MTC Cars

This list was compiled mostly from the disposition records, but also from data (as listed) found in the ”Freight Car Data” area. While photographic proof (other than MTC 8000) is probably the “best” source, this is likely the “best” list of cars with MTC reporting marks that can be made (unless more photos are found).

TO DO list

If someone doesn’t beat me to it….I plan on working on the following:

  • Integrating the Disposal data into the “main” Freight Car Data pages

    • Adding last “N” (10 or 20) car numbers for each car series, and their retirement dates section as well.

  • Try to establish (approx.) start/end dates for each list

  • For rebuilt box cars, compare “Rebuilt” dates from Disposal data with ORER notes on “end” data to try to determine when Mogul and all-steel “Murphy” ends were applied to boxcars

  • for 7681 - 7699 cars, document their “source” cars
